PeaceTrees Vietnam Receives First International Grant from Washington Women's Foundation

Seattle, WA, December 24, 2010 --(PR.com)-- PeaceTrees Vietnam (PeaceTrees) has been awarded Washington Women’s Foundation’s (WWF) first international grant of $14,000 for its Healthful Gardens for Healthy Children™ program in Da Krong District, Vietnam.

The Award was announced at WWF’s International Grant Showcase on December 14th. "The impact of PeaceTrees Vietnam is transformational for the people in the villages they serve, and we are delighted to be able to support their amazing work through this first-ever international grant from our Foundation," said Carla Lewis, President of the Washington Women's Foundation.

Currently, families in the Da Krong District are challenged to sustain productive farmlands because a substantial majority of the land is still potentially dangerous due to unexploded ordnance. These conditions create widespread malnutrition in children, with 43% of the children in this District being malnourished.

Working in conjunction with the Quang Tri Province Women’s Union, PeaceTrees Healthy Gardens for Healthy Children program will remove landmines and unexploded ordnance from family garden plots, teach 132 women in one commune how to grow nutritious foods for their children through more sustainable farming practices, provide tools, seeds and supplies, and create a model that can be replicated in other villages.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant,” said PeaceTrees Executive Director Blair B. Burroughs. “By clearing land of the explosive remnants of war and addressing malnutrition, this program should significantly reduce the continuing social, economic and environmental impact of the war in this area.”

The Seattle International Foundation (SIF) served as a partner and advisor to WWF in this process, and Executive Director Mauricio Vivero announced that SIF would also make a generous grant to PeaceTrees Vietnam.
